Unilateral hearing loss

2022-03-28

Although hearing loss often affects both ears, it is not uncommon that only one side is affected.

Unilateral hearing loss (UHL) describes any degree of permanent hearing loss in one ear with normal hearing in the opposite ear.

The overall prevalence of unilateral hearing loss in American adults is considered to be 7.2%, with 5.2% having a mild, and 1.5% a moderate or worse unilateral hearing loss.

Research has shown that unilateral hearing loss is associated with:

  • Difficulties telling which direction sounds are coming from (localization), being less aware of sounds on the side with hearing loss and struggling to understand in noisy environments or at a distance.
  • Feeling less connected and more lonely.
